About the grant

The Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation supports projects of high scientific potential in the social sciences. Projects must focus on a coherent scientific question and have an independent objective, not just supplementary funding for ongoing activities or other started projects. Applications can be made by individual researchers or project groups (2-4 researchers) with a permanent affiliation to Swedish universities, colleges, scientific academies or similar research and education institutions. Research must be conducted at Swedish higher education institutions. Typical budgets are between 3 and 9 million SEK with a duration of 3-5 years. Up to 20% of the granted amount may be used for indirect costs and rent. An individual researcher can participate in a maximum of two ongoing projects, of which at most one as principal applicant. The application period is 1 March to 1 April at 13:00 each year. Applications are submitted electronically and must be complete including CV, project description, budget and certificate from rector/head of department. Funded research must be published open access.

Requirements

  • The project must have an independent objective and not be supplementary funding to other projects
  • Applicants must be individual researchers or research groups (2-4 researchers) with permanent affiliation to a Swedish higher education institution or scientific institution
  • Principal applicant must perform at least 70% of work time in Sweden, co-applicants at least 50%
  • Research must be conducted at Swedish higher education institutions
  • An individual researcher can participate in max two ongoing projects, of which one as principal applicant
  • Projects can be considered for funding at max two application rounds
  • Applications must be complete and submitted electronically
  • Applications must include certificate from rector/head of department, CV, project description, budget and other specified attachments
  • Research must be published open access according to university rules
