About the grant
The project investigates and validates satellite-based methods that calculate snow extent and properties and develops alternative algorithms from complex radar satellite data and associated snow and radar models. Satellite radar data is well suited for Arctic areas and can detect ground and snow changes through clouds and during the polar night. Analysis is conducted of satellite signatures and their influence by ground properties such as vegetation, soil temperature and snow depth in connection with automatic sensor networks. Snow models are used to examine snow signal formation during the snow season. Operational and new satellite methods are tested and studies are conducted to improve snow forecasts through radar satellite data analysis. The project is carried out in northern Sweden and Norway and validated through field surveys and automatic measurements from weather stations and sensor networks.
